Switching over to a lower-waste lifestyle is just like Bill Murray in What about Bob? – it requires baby steps.
One of the changes I had the most hesitation making, was switching out my plastic shaving razor – the one with the fancy three or four blades per head – and trading it in for an Albatross Double-Edge Safety Razor (as recommended by my low-waste inspo @zerowastechica).
My mom has told me horror stories about how she used to use a safety razor when she was younger, and the amount of times she nicked herself shaving. (She actually gasped out loud when I told her I bought one. I’m guessing it was the flashbacks…) But here I am, a few months later. Shaving my legs like a champ, without one nick. (Albeit, the first four times I shaved, I took over an hour each time.) I still miss a few spots on my knees now and again, but practice makes perfect! And I’m so glad I made the switch.
Not only am I not using disposable plastic, but I’m saving myself a ton of money. I got the 3-piece safety razor for $20 – and it came with 10 replacement blades! If I need to buy more, they cost $0.15 each. No more expensive razor heads for me! Plus, did I mention this razor makes your legs feel super smooth? It’s honestly the best shave I’ve had… probably ever.
One tip @zerowastechica gave me was to disassemble the razor to let it air-dry after each use. It prolongs the life of it. Recycling the blades is also very important. I’m still sorting out how to properly dispose of the blades in an old can – but it seems pretty easy to me!
Have you tried a safety razor yet? Add one to your routine and let me know what you think! Small changes make a difference – and this one saves you money. It’s a no-brainer!
